DIY Laundry Soap: My Flight Attendant-Approved Hack for Luxuriously Clean, Fresh, Budget-Friendly Laundry

DIY Laundry Soap: Use less product and spend less that $100 for the year

Hey you! It’s The Flight Attendant Nextdoor, your travel-centric sista in the sky, here to share one of my favorite wellness and home hacks that has saved me serious coins—and stress. Let’s talk about something I never thought I’d get excited about sharing: DIY laundry soap.

I know, I know... laundry isn’t exactly glamorous. But hear me out—when you’re a flight attendant, and lover of all things clean and simple, finding a natural, affordable way to keep clothes fresh is everything. Between sweaty uniforms, spilled lunch, and the occasional mystery hotel-room moldy carpet funk, I needed something that actually worked—without harsh chemicals or overpriced ingredients. What Im sharing will save you money, time and less landfill waste.

And that’s how my love affair with DIY laundry soap began.

Why I Switched to DIY Laundry Soap

There were three big reasons why I made the switch, and maybe you can relate:

  • Sensitive Skin in the Family: Some store-bought detergents were way too harsh for my kiddos in the early days and even irritated my skin after long days in polyester uniforms.

  • Cost-Effective: Making your own detergent saves serious money over time—especially when you're doing as much laundry as I do.Im big on washing my sheets and comforter very often.

  • Cleaner Ingredients: I like knowing exactly what’s going on my body (and my families’ clothes). No dyes, no artificial fragrances (in 1st recipe)—just clean clothes and peace of mind.

What You Need to Make a Gentle DIY Laundry Soap

The best part? You only need a few simple ingredients—most of which you can find in the same aisle as baking soda.

DIY Powder Laundry Soap Recipe:

  • 1 bar of castile soap (like Dr. Bronner’s or Kirk’s)

  • 1 cup washing soda

  • 1 cup baking soda

  • 1/2 cup borax (optional, but great for deep cleaning)

  • A few drops of essential oil (lavender, lemon, or tea tree are my faves)

Tools:

  • Cheese grater or food processor

  • Large mixing bowl

  • Storage container (I use a mason jar or old detergent tub)

To make it:

  1. Grate the bar of soap finely using a cheese grater or processor.

  2. Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl.

  3. Add 10–20 drops of essential oil if desired.

  4. Store in an airtight container.

Use 2–3 tablespoons per load. That’s it!

Why This Works for My Flight Attendant Life

I

f you’re in the air as much as I am—or just busy living life—you need laundry solutions that are simple, effective, and travel-friendly. Here’s why I keep a small stash of my DIY laundry soap in my suitcase and crash pad:

  • Perfect for Hotel or Airbnb Wash Days: I pack a little travel-sized container of powder soap for layovers with laundry access. No more wasting quarters on overpriced detergent from the vending machine!

  • Gentle Enough for Uniforms: My DIY soap keeps my work clothes looking fresh without fading or fabric damage.

  • Safe for Kids’ Clothing: No more worrying about itchy seams or rashes from unknown ingredients.

Bonus Tips for Fresh, Clean Laundry

Want to level up your laundry game even more? Here are a few extra tricks I swear by:

  • Add 1/2 cup baking soda to the wash for extra deodorizing power.

  • Use white vinegar as a fabric softener substitute—just pour 1/4 cup into the rinse cycle.

  • Dry clothes outside in the sun when you can—it's nature’s original bleach and deodorizer!

My Current Go-To Hardworking Blend: My Daughter’s DIY Laundry Soap Recipe

Let me let you in on a little secret—I’ve been using my daughter’s recipe for the past year, and it’s the real MVP in my household. This blend is tough on dirt, smells amazing, and stretches a long way (a win-win for a me with laundry piles of towels, sheets and uniforms that need constant attention). It’s what she uses for her small family. 1 heaping tbsp to Use 1/4 cup per load!

Here’s what we mix together for this power-packed ingredient boosted DIY laundry soap:

Ingredients:

  • 1 bag of Foca detergent

  • 1 bag of Ariel detergent

  • 1 box washing soda

  • 1 box borax

  • 1 bag of Roma powder detergent

  • 1 full 15lb bag of baking soda

Optional, but highly recommended:

  • Add white vinegar to the rinse cycle – this helps break down residue, softens fabrics, and gives clothes an extra fresh finish (especially helpful for uniforms and gym clothes!).

Why I love this blend (wash a years worth of clothing for under $100):

  • It cleans deep—even when my boys come home with laundry chaos.

  • It smells so good.

  • It’s affordable and easy to make in big batches, which means less time restocking and more time living and travelling.

  • The cost of latest batch drastically reduced from $60 to $35 by selecting a different store in another county to source ingredients

Final Thoughts from 30,000 Feet

Making my own laundry soap might sound small, but it’s been a powerful shift in my journey toward living at ease, simpler, and more intentionally—whether I’m soaring through the sky (wiping galleys) or scrubbing stains on the ground.

This hack isn’t just about laundry—it’s about taking control of what touches your body, saving money for the things that matter (hello, impromptu vacation fund), and creating systems that support your busy life.

Give it a try. Let your laundry work for you—not the other way around.

With love and lavender-scented clothes—

🌍 Life After Landing: How My Flight Attendant Career Inspires My Dinner Table Traditions

Discover how a flight attendant transforms service skills into elegant home entertaining. Insights on travel life, hospitality, and balancing both worlds.

Hey friends! 👋

After years of serving meals and dining in diverse places, I’ve picked up a few tricks on making even the smallest spaces feel a bit more refined. Whether you’re hosting a cozy dinner at home or setting up a charming picnic during your travels, I’ve got you covered with easy, elegant table setting tips and napkin folds that don’t require a first-class budget.

Let’s turn your next meal—whether in a Paris Airbnb or your backyard—into a moment worth remembering.

🥂 Why Table Setting Still Matters (Even When You’re on the Go)

You don’t need fine china or five-star cutlery. Setting a thoughtful table:

  • Elevates even the simplest meals (yes, even takeout!)

  • Adds a touch of calm and connection during fast-paced travel

  • Shows love—whether you’re dining solo or with new friends

🍽️ The Basic Travel-Friendly Table Setting

(Minimalist, packable, and still polished)

Here’s a simple, go-anywhere table layout that works in small spaces:

🔸 Placemats or a folded scarf – adds texture & defines each setting
🔸 Utensils: Fork on the left, knife and spoon on the right (blade facing in)
🔸 Plates or travel dishware: Centered, with a side plate if you have room
🔸 Glassware: Just one multipurpose cup or travel wine glass does the trick
🔸 Napkin: Folded with flair—see ideas below!

Travel Tip: A reusable utensil set and a soft placemat roll up easily in your luggage!

🧺 Easy & Elegant Napkin Folds

You don’t need linen to make an impact. Here are a few favorites I use on the road:

1. The Jetsetter Fan Fold

Perfect for picnics or coffee tables
👉 How-to: Accordion fold the napkin, pinch at one end, and fan it out. Place in a glass or lay across a plate.

2. The Passport Pocket Fold

Slip in a menu, note, or travel quote 🌍
👉 How-to: Fold the napkin in thirds, then fold up to form a pocket. Great for adding a sprig of rosemary or a travel keepsake.

3. The Flat Lay Envelope

Chic, compact, and fits anywhere
👉 How-to: Fold napkin into a rectangle, then fold the bottom third up and the sides inward like an envelope flap.

Pro Tip: Cloth napkins double as packing pads or snack wraps for day trips!

🕯️ Setting the Mood on the Move

Small details make a big difference when you’re far from home:

  • 🍋 A sliced lemon or fresh herbs can be centerpiece magic

  • ✈️ Travel candles (LED for safety!) add cozy glow

  • 🎶 A Bluetooth speaker with soft background music = instant ambiance

You don’t need a five-course meal—just a little intention and love.

✍️ Final Thoughts

As a flight attendant, I’ve learned that hospitality isn’t about perfection—it’s about presence. Whether you’re dining in Santorini or sipping soup in a cabin in the woods, a simple table setting and a thoughtfully folded napkin invite warmth and connection.

Here’s your boarding pass to a more mindful meal, wherever your journey takes you. 💛

Bon appétit and safe travels,
— Marlisa, the flight attendant next door ✈️

🌺 Why May Is the Perfect Time to Visit Oahu: A Flight Attendant’s Whirlwind Getaway to Honolulu

Exploring Honolulu: A Quick Adventure in French Polynesia

As a flight attendant with an incurable case of wanderlust, I’ve been fortunate enough to visit some truly stunning destinations—but Hawaii always has a way of pulling me back. A few years ago, in May, I took a quick yet soul-refreshing trip to Oahu for the second time, and even in just a few days, the island worked its allure.

🌴 Why Oahu in May? Here's What Makes It So Special

May is one of Oahu’s best-kept secrets. The weather is warm but not sweltering, crowds are thinner before the summer rush, and airfare/hotel rates are often more wallet-friendly. Add in blooming tropical flowers and the start of local festival season, and you’ve got a recipe for a dreamy island escape.I  had the chance to explore the beautiful island of Oahu for a second time, and I wanted to share a bit about my whirlwind trip in and out of Honolulu. Although it was a short getaway, every moment was packed with the pulse of the island,. Here’s a recap of my 2-day Honolulu journey.

Whether you're dreaming of your first visit or planning a return, here's a glimpse into my mini escape and why May might just be the perfect time for your own Hawaiian adventure.

Day 1: Travel Day and Arrival

I started my trip by taking an early United Airlines flight from Newark (EWR) to Honolulu (HNL). The flight was long, but I managed to sleep through most of it, crossing multiple time zones without even realizing it! It was one of those rare flights where you wake up and feel refreshed, even after a long-haul journey. Flight time was 10 hours and 58 minutes.

Upon landing in Honolulu, I was greeted by a fellow flight attendant friend whom I planned the trip with. We flew  into town on separate flights. We were both ready to hit the ground running.

For our accommodation, we decided to stay at the Waikiki Boutique Hostel. It was affordable, comfortable, and in a great location for a quick trip. After settling in, we ventured out to explore the iconic Waikiki Beach area. We snapped a few pictures of the pristine blue water, golden sand, and iconic banyan trees then started planning the rest of our flexible day.

Adventure at Diamond Head

Next up was a visit to Diamond Head area, one of Oahu’s most famous landmarks. We caught the bus to the base of Diamond Head and set out to hike a portion of the Summit Trail. The 0.8-mile hike takes you to  the top, offering sweeping panoramic views of the island and the Pacific Ocean. We took interest in a tunnel that had gusty wind blowing through it. For us it was worth it for the slow motion images we took while being caught in the wind.

After the hike, we decided to walk all the way back to the hostel, which turned out to be a great way to see more of the city. By the time we returned, we were ready for a well-deserved dinner.

Dinner at Manukamudon

For dinner, we headed to Manukamudon, a cozy spot known for its delicious rice bowls and comforting flavors. It was the perfect meal to refuel after a day of hiking and sightseeing. We ate, laughed, and enjoyed the local atmosphere before heading out to our next stop.

International Marketplace & Evening Stroll

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll through the International Marketplace. It’s a vibrant shopping center with lots of local shops, restaurants, and entertainment. The marketplace has a great mix of traditional Hawaiian culture and modern shopping, making it a fun place to browse and take in the sights Before calling it a night.

Day 2: A Day of Culture and Adventure

The next morning, I woke up early since my body clock was on East Coast Time; took time to pack for the day ahead. We helped ourselves to a complimentary breakfast at the Waikiki hostel. After fueling up, we made our way to the Polynesian Cultural Center. We took the narrated motor coach transportation, which made the journey easy, informative and cheerful. We arrived at the center around noon, ready to dive into a full day of Hawaiian culture.

Polynesian Cultural Center

The Polynesian Cultural Center is a  must-see when visiting Honolulu.  It offers a deep dive into the traditions, art, and customs of Polynesia through interactive exhibits, performances, and demonstrations. We spent hours exploring the different villages, learning about the culture of Hawaii, Fiji, Tahiti, Samoa, and more. The center’s immersive approach to storytelling made it an unforgettable experience that took up the entire day.

A Traditional Luau

As the evening approached, we enjoyed the highlight of the day—the Luau! The traditional Hawaiian feast was a treat for both the eyes and the taste buds. We feasted on purplish blue Hawaiian roll made from taro root, poi (a taro root starchy side), and other local specialties while enjoying hula dancing and Polynesian music. It was the perfect way to end a day of cultural exploration.

Heading Home

After the Luau, it was time to say goodbye to Oahu. We boarded our Hawaiian Airlines flight to the West Coast and, from there, a Delta flight back to the East Coast. Although my trip was short, it was packed with experiences I’ll remember forever.

Honolulu is a stunning destination, and even in just two days, I felt like I experienced a full mix of nature, culture, and local life. I’ll definitely be back for more!

✈️ Quick Trip, Big Impact: My Oahu Itinerary Highlights Overview

Even on a short trip, you can soak in the island’s rhythm. Here’s how I made the most of every hour:

1. Sunrise at Lanikai Beach
I landed just in time to catch the golden glow over the Mokulua Islands. Soft waves, silky sand, and a peaceful breeze—this beach is the definition of paradise.

2. Local Eats in Kailua
From fresh acai bowls to garlic shrimp trucks, I indulged in island flavors that hit just right after a red-eye flight. Pro tip: Get the loco moco for brunch—you won’t regret it.

3. Diamond Head Hike
No matter how many times I visit, the views from above always take my breath away. This time frame, the trails should be quieter, and the clear skies make for perfect photos.

4. Sunset at Waikiki
Capping the day with a mai tai and a fiery sunset over the ocean reminded me why Honolulu is such a vibe. If you can snag a spot at Duke’s or House Without a Key, do it.

🧳 Travel Tips from the Jumpseat

As someone who's often on the move, here are a few travel tips to help you make the most of a quick Hawaiian getaway:

  • Pack light!!!: You’ll live in swimwear and breezy clothes. Leave the heels at home.

  • Book midweek flights: Tuesdays and Wednesdays tend to be cheaper and less crowded.

  • Rent a car: Oahu is best explored beyond Waikiki. A drive up to the North Shore is a must.

  • Hydrate: That island sun is no joke. Coconut water is your best friend.

  • Be respectful: Hawaii is more than a postcard—it’s home to a deep, living culture. Support local, learn a bit of Hawaiian, and leave no trace. PS. you will fill out a custom like form from the Hawaiian Tourism Authority upon arrival

🌈 Final Thoughts: Let the Island Slow You Down

Even though my trip was short, it reminded me of something I think we all forget—how powerful it is to slow down, change scenery, breathe deep, and let a place sink into your soul.

If you're thinking about traveling to Hawaii, May is a golden window of time. Fewer crowds, better rates, and everything in bloom—it’s as if the island is whispering, “Come now.”

I highly recommend the experiences I had—especially the Diamond Head hike, the Polynesian Cultural Center, and the Luau. There’s so much to see and do (in a laid back way), and you can make the most of even a short visit.

Ways I Use Baking Soda: A Flight Attendant’s Go-To Hack (Or My Strange Addiction)

As someone who splits her time between cruising many feet in the air and cleaning up DIY spills at home (don’t ask), I’m all about finding simple solutions that actually work—whether I’m living out of a suitcase or juggling a dozen things around the house. If it can’t multitask like I do, I’m not interested. Here’s how I make everyday life a little easier, no matter where I am. As someone who lives part-time dragging bags and part-time doing random things  around the house, I need simple solutions that work everywhere. Here's how baking soda fits right into my routine—on the ground and in the air.

Freshen Up Travel Essentials

Because no one wants their suitcase to smell like last weeks layover (with the damp bathing suit we forget to airdry):

  • Deodorize Suitcases: Sprinkle a bit inside after a trip and let it sit. Vacuum or shake it out before repacking.

  • Clean Reusable Water Bottles: A little baking soda and warm water gets rid of that funky smell. Rinse well.

  • Neutralize Shoe Odors: Pour some in your travel sneakers overnight, and shake them out the next morning. Works like magic!

Bathroom Bliss (Yes, Even in Tiny Spaces)

From hotel bathrooms to home tub time, baking soda keeps things sparkling:

  • Shiny Sinks & Tubs: Sprinkle on a damp sponge and scrub away the stress (and soap scum).

  • Unclog Drains Naturally: Mix 1/2 cup baking soda + 1/2 cup vinegar. Let it fizz, rinse with very hot water.

  • Brighten Grout: Make a paste with water, scrub with an old toothbrush, rinse. Your tiles will thank you.

Kitchen Cleaning Hacks (For Home or Crash Pad)

Because clean kitchens = peace of mind:

  • Odor-Free Fridge: Keep an open box in your fridge and swap it out monthly.

  • Burnt Pots Be Gone: Sprinkle the bottom with baking soda, add hot water, soak, then scrub.

  • Cutting Board Refresher: Scrub with baking soda and a damp sponge to nix food smells and stains.

Laundry Lifesaver

Airplane clothes and mom life don’t always exist in the most sanitary conditions. Baking soda helps me freshen up fast:

  • Boost Your Detergent: Add 1/2 cup to laundry for brighter whites and better-smelling clothes. By the way, I make my own laundry soap powder that lasts around a 1 year, using this star ingredient.

  • Tackle Stains: Make a paste with water, let sit on stains for 15 minutes, then wash as usual.

  • Deodorize Workout or Uniform Gear: Pre-soak in baking soda + water before washing. Goodbye, airplane funk.

  • Deodorize Luggage Liners: Sprinkle baking soda inside your carry-on's fabric lining, let it sit overnight, then shake or vacuum it out.

  • Soften Towels Naturally: Add 1/2 cup baking soda to your wash cycle to revive stiff towels and make them extra fluffy.

  • Combat Mildew Smells: Got a damp towel left in your bag a little too long? Soak it in warm water with baking soda before washing to neutralize musty smells.

General Home Hacks

Because I like my space—no matter how small or temporary—to feel like a fresh start:

  • Carpet Refresher: Sprinkle, let sit 20 minutes, vacuum. Feels like a reset.

  • Polish Silver or Jewelry: Make a paste with water, gently rub, rinse, and shine.

  • Trash Can Deodorizer: A spoonful at the bottom of the bin makes a huge difference.

  • Clean Hair Brushes & Combs: Soak them in warm water with 1 tablespoon of baking soda to remove oil and buildup.

  • Freshen Mattress & Upholstery: Lightly sprinkle baking soda over your mattress or couch, let it sit for 30 minutes, and vacuum it up to absorb odors.

  • Clean Coffee & Tea Stains from Mugs: Make a paste with a little baking soda and water, scrub gently, and those stubborn stains will disappear.

  • DIY Air Freshener: Fill a small jar with baking soda and a few drops of essential oil. Poke holes in the lid or cover with breathable fabric—it’s perfect for closets or bathrooms.

  • Shine Stainless Steel: Make a paste with baking soda and water, rub it gently onto stainless steel surfaces, then rinse and buff with a dry cloth for a fingerprint-free shine

Self-Care with Baking Soda: Because You Deserve It

Sadly, between flights, family, and the constant hustle, we don’t always get time for full-blown self-care routines. But guess what? Baking soda steps in again to help us look and feel refreshed, without needing a fancy spa appointment.

  • DIY Detox Bath Soak: After a long trip, I mix 1/2 cup of baking soda with 1/2 cup of Epsom salt and a few drops of lavender essential oil. Soak for 20 minutes to ease muscle tension and detox from airport air. I keep a jar of baking soda handy to exfoliate my skin while in the shower.

  • Gentle Face Exfoliator: Mix a teaspoon of baking soda with a splash of water to create a soft paste. Gently rub it onto your skin in circular motions, rinse off, and moisturize. Instant glow-up!

  • Soothing Foot Soak: After a long day in heels or crew shoes, I fill a basin with warm water, add 2 tablespoons of baking soda, and let my feet relax. Add peppermint oil if you’re feeling fancy.

  • Deodorizing Hair Rinse: To clarify my scalp, periodically between washes (post protective styling), I mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1 tablespoon shampoo with slip with warm water and use it as a pre-shampoo treatment. It removes buildup and refreshes my hair.

  • Brighten Your Smile: I occasionally dip my toothbrush in baking soda (or mix with a little coconut oil) for a natural whitening boost. Just don’t overdo it—1-2x per week is plenty!

Real Talk: Why This Matters

As a flight attendant and mom, I’m all about simple routines that
work. Baking soda keeps my home (and travel life) cleaner, calmer, and more manageable. It’s not just about hygiene—it’s about reclaiming time, energy, and mental space. I could go on and on about the uses but here a few that I feel many would appreciate.

You don’t need fancy tools or expensive products to feel in control—you just need a few solid, affordable tricks up your sleeve. And baking soda? She’s the MVP of the crew!!!

Your Turn—Try It and Thank Me Later
,

Got a baking soda tip I haven’t tried yet? Let me know! And if you’re ready to streamline your cleaning routine without breaking the bank, grab a few boxes on your next grocery run. You’ll be amazed at how this little white powder can elevate your space—and your sanity.

Until next time, keep it fresh and fly high.

With love,
Marlisa aka The Flight Attendant Nextdoor
