Dubai—a city where the future meets tradition, where golden deserts stretch beneath futuristic skyscrapers, and where luxury is woven into every moment. From its iconic landmarks to its immersive cultural experiences, Dubai is a destination that captivates and dazzles. After dreaming about visiting this stunning metropolis that has exploded over the past decade, I finally had the chance to explore it during a 48-hour adventure. Here’s a sneak peek into my whirlwind trip to one of the world’s most awe-inspiring cities!



Travel Day: Crossing Time Zones & Gaining New Perspectives

My journey began with a late-night Megabus ride to New York, followed by a 12-hour flight from the East Coast to Dubai. Crossing the International Date Line felt like stepping into a time warp! The excitement built with each passing flight mile. To make the long flight a bit more enjoyable, I spent time sleeping as this was my strategy to adjust to the time change. Also passed time chatting with a fellow flight attendant between naps,  once we land will be hitting the ground running. .

After landing in the U.A.E., the anticipation was high. so much to do in a short time. I had arrived, and a world of interesting sites awaited!



Day 1: A Day of Wonders

After checking in to hotel and refreshing myself with a long-awaited shower, I dove headfirst into my Dubai adventure. The first stop? Miracle Garden, a colorful oasis in the desert. Imagine vibrant blooms in every hue, forming intricate displays that are nothing short of magical. It was a photographer’s dream! 🌸

Next, I ventured to the Dubai Mall, one of the largest shopping malls in the world. While I couldn’t splurge (my budget wasn’t quite ready for that), I indulged in some window shopping and marveled at the gigantic indoor aquarium. The mall’s scale and offerings were mind-blowing. After a few hours of exploring, it was time to unwind and rest up for an exciting day ahead.



Day 2: Iconic Sights and Thrilling Adventures

The next morning began with a hearty breakfast (because a day full of sightseeing needs a good meal). I hired a driver for a tour of Dubai’s iconic landmarks. First on the list was the Burj Khalifa, standing tall at 828 meters. It’s one thing to see it in photos, but in person? Truly jaw-dropping!

Next up was the Dubai Frame, a golden architectural marvel offering a panoramic view of Dubai’s past, present, and future. Then, I visited the Museum of the Future, a futuristic space that felt like stepping into another world. Dubai’s architecture, tech, and design are next-level!


But the highlight of my day was yet to come: Desert Safari! I hopped into a dune buggy and had to practice to qualify for the journey, with a few instructions, it was time to conquer the desert dunes because thankfully I passed the test. The experience was exhilarating—imagine a rollercoaster ride on the vast sand, with the backdrop of endless desert! I wore calf lace up mocassins and that helped to keep sand out of my shoes.

The safari ended at a traditional Bedouin campsite, where I was treated to a henna tattoo, belly dancing, traditional music, and an abundance of mouthwatering Middle Eastern cuisine as the sun set over the golden dunes. It was the perfect way to immerse myself in Dubai's rich cultural tapestry.



Evening Exploration: Dubai's Hidden Treasures

After a full day of of being on the go, I freshened up and took a car to the Gold and Spice Souks, where I experienced sensory overload. I didnt buy much because I had more traveling to do but Im open to returning with a shopping list. The bustling markets are lined with clothing, gold jewelry, fragrant spices, and exotic perfumes. It’s an immersive experience if you like finding exclusive treasures. I say go for it if you can make it. I can’t recommend enough! Walking through these vibrant stalls felt like discovering hidden treasures.

Although 48 hours is just a brief snapshot of what Dubai has to offer, it was enough to capture its dynamic energy, stunning landscapes, and unforgettable experiences. From the towering Burj Khalifa to the serene desert adventures, Dubai truly has something for everyone.

As I boarded my flight further into Asia, I was already thinking about my next trip to this city of contrasts and prepared to spend more time there. Whether it's scaling skyscrapers, diving into its cultural heritage, or conquering desert dunes, Dubai has earned a spot at the top of my travel list for future adventures.

  • Best Time to Visit: November through March, when the weather is cooler and more comfortable for exploring.
  • Dress Code: While Dubai is modern, modest dress is encouraged, especially when visiting religious sites or traditional areas.
  • Transportation: Hire a driver for a more personalized experience, or use the efficient metro for quick access to popular spots.
  • Stay Hydrated: The desert heat can be intense, so always carry water with you while sightseeing.

Welcome to the Spring Season of Body Harmony

Spring is a time of renewal, growth, and transformation—not just for nature but for our bodies as well. As the world shakes off the chill of winter and bursts into bloom, our bodies are naturally inclined to detoxify, refresh, and rebalance.

About a year ago, I adopted the practice of seasonal attunement, inspired by principles from Asian medicine. This approach recognizes that our bodies adjust to their environment with each changing season. By focusing on specific organ systems, cleansing and nourishing them appropriately, we can optimize our overall wellness.

This five-part series—Spring, Summer, Late Summer, Fall, and Winter—dives into how we can support our bodies through seasonal transitions. For Spring, we’ll focus on the Liver and Gallbladder, two vital organs that play a key role in detoxification and digestion.

Let’s explore how to align with the energy of Spring and bring balance to these organs for a vibrant, harmonious season ahead!


Understanding the Liver and Gallbladder in Spring


According to traditional health wisdom, the Liver and Gallbladder are the organs most active in the Spring season. They are associated with:

  • Sour flavors (like lemons and green apples)

  • The element of Wind (which can stir up movement and change in the body)

  • Simple, fresh food preparation (light meals, raw greens, and cleansing broths)

  • Emotional well-being (anger, frustration, and stress can manifest when these organs are stagnant)

When these organs are off balance, we may experience:

  • Fatigue and sluggish digestion

  • Irritability or mood swings

  • Skin issues like breakouts or dullness

  • Headaches or a heavy sensation in the body

  • Cravings for greasy or processed foods

To support the body's natural rhythm, we can use food, herbs, and detox techniques to cleanse, strengthen, and nourish these essential organs.


Spring Liver & Gallbladder Cleanse


Last year, I experimented with a Gallbladder Flush, and the results were almost instant! The key? Apples and malic acid.

Malic acid, found abundantly in apples, helps soften gallstones and supports the liver in breaking down toxins. Apples aren’t a regular part of my diet, so when I consumed an abundance of them in one day (four or more), I noticed a rapid improvement in how I felt.

Here’s a simple one-day gallbladder flush recipe:

One-Day Gallbladder Flush

Ingredients:

  • 5+ green apples (Granny Smith is best)

  • Water (to stay hydrated and aid detoxification)

  • Herbal teas (such as dandelion or milk thistle tea for liver support)

  • 2/3 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)

  • 1/3 cup Fresh Lemon Juice (for bile flow stimulation)

Directions:

  1. Eat at least four green apples throughout the day. If possible, consume them raw or in freshly pressed juice.

  2. Drink plenty of water and herbal teas to stay hydrated.

  3. In the evening, mix 2/3 cup EVOO with 1/3 cup fresh lemon juice and drink before bed.

  4. Lie on your right side for at least 30 minutes to aid digestion and detoxification.

  5. The next morning, expect a gentle flushing effect, signaling that the cleanse is working!

This is a simple and natural way to reset your system and give your Liver and Gallbladder a fresh start for Spring.


Juicing for Liver and Gallbladder Health


One of my go-to resources is Juicing for Life, a book I picked up at a library sale years ago. It contains amazing recipes for liver support, and I often incorporate similar blends into my routine.

Here are a few beneficial juice combinations:

Liver-Cleansing Juice Recipe

  • 2 green apples

  • 1 beet

  • 1 carrot

  • 1/2 lemon (peeled)

  • 1-inch ginger root

Gallbladder-Supporting Juice Recipe

  • 1 cucumber

  • 2 celery stalks

  • 1 green apple

  • Handful of parsley

  • 1 lime (peeled)

Both of these juices aid digestion, detoxification, and inflammation reduction—perfect for Spring Body Harmony!


Herbs, Vitamins, and Nutrients for Liver & Gallbladder Support

  • Milk Thistle – Protects liver cells and aids detoxification.

  • Dandelion Root – Supports bile production and digestion.

  • Choline – Helps break down fat and supports bile flow.

Spring calls for light, fresh, and cleansing foods to help the body transition from winter's heavier diet. Focus on:

  • Plenty of leafy greens (dandelion greens, spinach, watercress)

  • Bitter foods (arugula, radishes, grapefruit)

  • Whole grains (quinoa, millet, brown rice)

  • Fermented foods (kimchi, sauerkraut, apple cider vinegar)

  • Lean proteins (wild-caught fish, tofu, pasture-raised chicken)

  • Excessive caffeine and alcohol (which burden the liver)

  • Processed and fried foods (which clog the gallbladder)

  • Dairy-heavy meals (which can slow digestion and bile flow)

Colombia has been calling my name, and perhaps as early as this summer, I may have an opportunity to make it happen! As The Flight Attendant Nextdoor, I love planning quick getaways that maximize adventure, culture, and affordability. If you’re thinking about visiting Colombia for a weekend trip from the East Coast, keep reading for my top inspirational travel tips, fast flight options, safety insights, must-try activities, budget-friendly hotels, and delicious eats that fit my dietary needs (perhaps yours too)!

Fastest Flights to Colombia from the Northeast

When time is limited, direct flights or short layovers are key! Here are some of the fastest airline options for a quick weekend trip from the Northeast:

  • Avianca – Offers direct flights from New York (JFK) and Washington, D.C. (IAD) to Bogotá (BOG) in about 5 hours.

  • American Airlines – Provides quick routes from Philadelphia (PHL) and New York (JFK) to Medellín (MDE) and Cartagena (CTG) with minimal layovers.

  • JetBlue – Great for non-stop flights from New York (JFK) to Bogotá (BOG) and Cartagena (CTG), often under 5.5 hours.

For a weekend getaway, I’d leave on a Thursday night or early Friday morning and return Sunday night or Monday morning to make the most of my time!

Safety is always a priority, and from my research and experiences of other travelers, Colombia is generally safe, but like any destination, it requires situational awareness. Here’s what I plan to keep in mind:

  • Stay in well-populated areas like El Poblado (Medellín), Getsemaní (Cartagena), or Zona T (Bogotá).

  • Use trusted transportation like Uber or hotel-arranged taxis instead of hailing cabs on the street.

  • Blend in by avoiding flashy jewelry and keeping valuables secure.

  • Be aware of nightlife safety – stick to reputable bars and clubs and always watch your drink.

  • Connect with locals or expat communities for tips on current safety conditions.

Top Activities to Try in Colombia (With Estimated Costs)


Colombia offers breathtaking scenery, vibrant culture, and incredible history. Here’s what’s on my must-do list:

  • Explore Cartagena’s Walled City ($0-$10) – Walk through the colorful streets, visit lively plazas, and take in the historic charm. Guided walking tours cost around $10.

  • Hike to Guatapé & El Peñol ($5-$20) – Climb the 700+ steps of El Peñol for stunning views. Entrance fees are about $5, and transportation from Medellín costs around $10-$15.

  • Visit Comuna 13 in Medellín ($0-$15) – Once a dangerous neighborhood, now a street art paradise full of culture and history. Free to visit, but guided tours cost around $10-$15.

  • Use ATMs for the Best Exchange Rates – Avoid currency exchange kiosks at the airport, as they often have higher fees.

  • Withdraw in Colombian Pesos (COP) to Save on Fees – Many businesses prefer cash, so carrying small bills is helpful.
